I have a love hate relationship with my garbage disposal.
Mostly hate. It smells... a lot.
I have been buying these not so environmentally friendly tablets to throw in there about once a week to help clean it out and stop the smell. I decided that maybe I'd try to make my own.
I looked online and did a little research and came across a recipe that had pretty much everything I had already so I figured that I'd give it a shot.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap
- 1 lemon
It was pretty easy to do. You measure the baking soda and salt and put them in a medium bowl. Whisk them until they are blended.
Grate the lemon and add it to the baking soda and salt mixture.
Mix it again and add the soap, then squeeze the juice of one lemon into the mix. It'll fizz up just a bit-- it's supposed to do that!
In the recipe that I found online, I said that you can shape this into little semi circles and let them dry overnight. Then you can just toss one down the drain whenever you need to freshen it up.
I added more baking soda than what the original recipe called for. I don't know if that's the reason they wouldn't stay in that cute little form or not. They kept breaking up. So I just tossed them in a mason jar, shook it up and I'm just tossing a tablespoon into the garbage disposal at a time.
Honestly, they aren't as good as the chemicals I was using before, but they do help to reduce the smell. I also found that if I throw a little bit of vinegar down the drain with them and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then turn on the water and the garbage disposal then it works even better.
