Homemade Chocolate Peppermint Lip Gloss

This year is a DIY Christmas! I'm really excited because I have a lot of great things planned, but I thought I'd start making gifts early so I don't get too overwhelmed as we get closer to the holiday season.

Easy homemade chocolate peppermint lip gloss for #christmas #diy #gifts.

My first project is a super easy homemade lip gloss. Of course, the flavors have a holiday feel, but it is very easy to substitute other flavors for different seasons. Lavender and Coconut are one of my favorites for when it starts to warm up while Peppermint/Grapefruit is perfect for summer. For fall, you have to try Cinnamon Orange! Yuuuum!!!!

My friend Joanne made a Peppermint Chocolate Lip Balm for her family and friends which was a huge hit! She inspired me to create a very simple recipe to share with you, but by request I made a lip gloss instead of a lip balm. I hope you enjoy it!

Makes about 1 dozen tins
Add the beeswax, coconut oil and cocoa butter into a double boiler over medium heat until melted. While still over the heat, add the castor oil, vegetable glycerin and vitamin E and give it a quick stir. Once the ingredients are throughly mixed, remove it from the heat and add the Peppermint Essential Oil.

Quickly pour the melted liquid into the chosen lip gloss containers. If the lip gloss mixture starts to become a solid before you've filled all the containers-- just put it back over the double boiler until melted.

If you are using lip balm tubes, I recommend using an egg carton to hold them in place by turning it upside down and cutting holes big enough to slide them into. If you want to use the same tins that I did for my lip gloss recipe, then you can find them here: Lip Balm Slide Tin Set (0.25 oz) with Labels

After you pour the lip gloss mixture in to the containers, let them sit until the liquid hardens into a solid before you move them. If you are in a hurry, you can quicken this process by carefully putting them in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes.

This lip gloss recipe has a nice soft mild flavor, but it's definitely tasty! I love the cocoa butter, but if you aren't a chocolate fan you can always use shea butter instead.

Lip Gloss vs Lip Balm
For fun I made this recipe twice with all the same ingredients except only teeny tiny substitution. In one batch I used castor oil (for gloss) and in the other I substituted jojoba oil in equal parts for the castor oil to make a balm.

Lip balm vs lip gloss

You can definitely see the difference that just one ingredient makes! I hope you enjoy this lip gloss recipe. Are you making any DIY holiday gifts this year? I would love to know what you have planned.

  3. What would you suggest if you wanted to add color?

    1. I like to add beet root powder. For red: Beet Root Powder. 1/8-1/4 tsp would probably be enough for this batch, but a little goes a LONG way so add slowly until you get the color you want. For Brown: 1/4-1/2 teaspoon (or more for color) of organic cocoa powder and a pinch of cinnamon or tumeric can change the shade a bit. I should write a post about colored gloss, huh? :)

    2. Thanks for the suggestions! I was looking at other pins on pinterst and they were adding food coloring, mineral eye shadow, Koo-lade, etc. If you are trying to stay "natural" those really are not the best things to add to your products. :-)

  4. Why the glycerine? I have all the other ingredients, but not that :(

    1. You don't NEED it, but it sure it nice! It adds moisture, but you can omit it if you don't have it.

    2. Thanks, would you put anymore Castor oil or vitamin E in it's place?
Sorry for the anonymity, but I need these to be Secret gifts :)

    3. I don't think you need to add anything to substitute for it, but if you want to add a couple drops more of vitamin E that won't hurt anything. :)

  5. Can I use spearmint oil instead of peppermint? Thx :)
